From the President's Perspective . . . March 2004
A very wise man and a dear friend once told me, “Dusty, your reach should always exceed your grasp.” I have pretty much tried to live by that advice.
One year ago, when I made the decision to run for President of EPIC, I had a great vision and ambitious plans for our organization. Have we seen that vision become a reality during my term as your president? Not completely. Have our plans been translated into action? Absolutely. Has every program we attempted achieved the success we had hoped for? No. But even a brief glimpse over our shoulder would reveal just how far we have come this past year.
In April of 2003 EPIC was floundering as an organization because we had no “head quarters”; no central gathering place; no web site.
Now, thanks to our vice president, Daniel J Reitz, we have one of the most modern, up-to-date and efficient web sites on the web.
In April of 2003 our only Promotion and public affairs effort was limited to a token effort by just one person.
Today, we have twenty-four state coordinators in twenty states and four foreign countries promoting EPIC activities and efforts for members in their home states as well as nationally.
In April of 2003 the idea of an e-publishers coalition was just that, an idea.
While it hasn’t yet achieved all that we envisioned, nor all that it will ultimately achieve, we have made a good start.
EPIC is an organization of published authors and industry professionals. It is comprised of near four hundred of the brightest and best of the publishing world. There is no limit to where we can go or what we can accomplish. My year as your president was but “one small step” on that exciting journey.
I leave the office of President of EPIC with mixed emotions.
I feel a sense of accomplishment at what has been done this past year. At the same time, I am disappointed that our grasp didn’t extend to our reach.
I leave you with one bit of advice. Choose your leaders wisely. The future of EPIC depends on your choice.
Hugs and Happy Trails!
