The President's Report . . .
June 2005
As wonderful as our EPICon2005 was aboard the Queen Mary, I am even more excited about EPICon2006 in San Antonio. Chairman Betty K. waylaid me in Long Beach to go over contracts with hotels -- including menus --oooh! Then, when I got home, I joined the committee's email loop. Ideas were discussed and honed. Their enthusiasm and creative approach was a wonder to see. They could have been putting this on next month, their plans are so complete, but we have to wait until March 16, 2006 to gather at the Menger. We'll tour the Alamo. We'll E-Fiesta! I can't wait!
One of the great aspects of the planning of the coming EPICon is that the planners of EPICon2007 are also on Betty's committee email list. This will lend experience and continuity to our "Cons". I hope this practice will continue into the future, as it makes the thought of hosting and planning an event less daunting. If you can't make it to San Antonio, consider Virginia Beach in '07.
Two issues are being looked into by EPIC. Karen Woods and Connie Crow have taken on the task of investigating health insurance for our members. We are hoping to find something economical but stable for our members who need it. Many of our publishers have small staffs, and having access to a group policy might eliminate one of their concerns. We hope to have something to bring before you in the next few months.
Finally, we are discussing membership cards. This might not seem like a big thing, but with 450 members (wow!) and growing, it would be a nice little perk. Brenna Lyons, whose energy and abilities go beyond what one woman should have, has volunteered to design them. It will be a tangible symbol of membership -- and might get you a discount at bookstores. But beyond that, we plan to also provide some addresses for your handy reference when you are away from your computer.
Keep writing!
